Rethinking Gift Cards: The Shift Toward Sustainable Alternatives
By Jennifer Kohlhepp, Managing Editor, ICMA
In the ever-evolving retail landscape, gift cards have become a go-to option for busy consumers seeking convenience and flexibility. However, this modern convenience comes at a considerable environmental cost. The International Card Manufacturers Association (ICMA) reports that nearly 30 billion plastic cards are produced worldwide each year, raising important questions about the sustainability of our gifting habits.
The Plastic Dilemma
Julie Brannen, a member of ICMA and director of sustainability solutions at Monadnock Paper Mills, highlights the urgent need to reassess our reliance on plastic gift cards. “Continuing to rely on plastic for gift card production is almost irresponsible, especially given their short lifespans,” she notes.
Alarmingly, more than 70% of gift cards are used and discarded within just six months, contributing to an estimated 53 million tons of plastic waste generated annually.
The situation is further complicated by the limitations of current recycling infrastructure. The United States has only 10 chemical-recycling plants with a total capacity of 456,000 tons per year, highlighting a significant shortfall in sustainable waste management solutions.
Pioneering a Solution
As the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States, Monadnock Paper Mills is at the forefront of addressing this challenge. For more than two centuries, the mill has pioneered alternative fibers and sustainable paper technologies, positioning it to offer viable solutions to the environmental issues associated with traditional plastic gift cards.
Introducing the Envi PC 100 Card
Monadnock’s Envi PC 100 Card is a game-changer in the gift card industry. Made entirely from 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled content, this innovative card functions like plastic but with less environmental impact. Available in various calipers optimized for HP Indigo presses, the Envi PC 100 Card does not compromise on quality or functionality.
Equipped with standard features such as magnetic stripes, scratch panels, bar codes and signature panels, these cards can also be customized with embossing, foil stamping and lamination. This ensures brands can maintain their identity while committing to eco-friendly practices.
“The market response to our Envi PC 100 Card has been incredibly positive,” shares Lisa Taylor, an ICMA member and vice president of sales and marketing at Monadnock. “Its functionality, printability and durability demonstrate that gift cards don’t need to be made of plastic. Since launching our paper card substrate, we’ve increased PCW content from 0% to 100%, resulting in the production of over 10 billion cards to date.”
A Commitment to Sustainability
The Envi PC 100 Card is manufactured using FSC Certified recycled fiber, providing additional reassurance for environmentally conscious consumers. Recent studies indicate that 77% of consumers are willing to abandon brands that do not adhere to sustainable practices. By adopting the Envi PC 100 Card, retailers not only enhance customer loyalty but also align themselves with an emerging market trend focused on sustainability.
As businesses face increasing pressure to adopt eco-friendly practices, offering gift cards that embody sustainable principles is a strategic move. The Envi PC 100 Card meets a wide range of branding requirements across various industries, enabling retailers to enrich their offerings and meet modern consumer expectations.
Driving the Future of Sustainable Commerce
With the Envi PC 100 Card, Monadnock Paper Mills is proving that convenience and eco-friendliness can coexist. Retailers embracing this innovation can reduce their environmental footprint while cultivating deeper connections with consumers who prioritize sustainability.
By rethinking gift card production and committing to sustainable practices, we can steer the future of retail toward a more environmentally responsible path. The Envi PC 100 Card represents not just a product, but a movement toward a cleaner, greener future in gifting.
