New Data Reveals Asia Pacific as the Fastest Growing and Largest Regional Card Market
PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ – May 22, 2014 – The International Card Manufacturers Association (ICMA), a global trade association for card manufacturers, personalizers, issuers and suppliers, has released its 2013 Global Card Market and Personalization and Fulfillment Statistics Reports. The comprehensive reports are a source of valuable card industry data generated from primary and secondary research and statistical modeling done by Al Vrancart, ICMA Founder Emeritus and Industry Advisor.
“The global card industry remains buoyant and continues to provide growth opportunities in several regional and vertical markets,” says Vrancart. “The reports reveal a 1.9% global unit growth and a 7.1% dollar growth in 2013. Adoption of more expensive chip cards continues to drive growth with 29% of all cards now having a chip, which represents 84% of the value of cards manufactured.”
The reports, which were delivered during ICMA’s annual EXPO in April by Vrancart, examines five regional markets including North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East/Africa (MEA) and Asia Pacific. Within these regions, the Card Market report analyzes card units manufactured in 12 vertical market segments: Prepaid Phone, SIM Mobile Phone, Financial, Gift, Government/Health, Retail Gas, Transportation, Loyalty/Promotional, ID/Membership, Access Control, Unprinted Blanks, and Other.
Highlights from the card market report include:
- The card industry is growing, with 34.2 billion card units manufactured last year, a 1.9% increase over 2012.
- A 6.5% increase of global card dollar market value was reported over the previous year, totaling $16.1 billion.
- Asia Pacific is the leading region in card production with over 12 billion card units manufactured and over $7 billion in dollar market value.
- North America follows with slightly over nine billion cards produced.
- Europe emerged as the second largest dollar market value with nearly $4.1 billion.
Highlights from the personalization and fulfillment market report include:
- The global card industry, personalized and fulfilled 30.2 billion cards in 2013, a 1.7 percent increase from the previous year.
- Asia Pacific ranks as the largest regional market for personalization and fulfillment with more than 10.6 billion cards.
- North America is the second regional market with 7.4 billion.
- The industry personalized and fulfilled $6.4 billion in card services, which is an 8.8 percent increase over 2012.
- 8.7 billion units produced are for global prepaid phone cards.
The global card manufacturing industry is valued at $16.1 billion and the personalization and fulfillment services market is valued at $6.4 billion.
