ICMA: The Epicenter of the Global Card Industry for 35 Years
By Jennifer Kohlhepp, Managing Editor, ICMA

The International Card Manufacturers Association (ICMA) is celebrating its 35th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its journey to becoming the epicenter of the global card manufacturing and personalization industry. The story of ICMA’s evolution is one of vision, innovation and collaboration, a testament to the way an industry can grow when its stakeholders unite with a common purpose.
The Birth of ICMA: Filling a Critical Industry Gap
In the early 1990s, the global card industry was booming, with billions of plastic cards being produced annually. Yet, despite the industry’s rapid growth, there was no independent, collective voice for card manufacturers or related service providers. The industry lacked a centralized platform to foster communication, share knowledge and keep track of industry trends and developments.
In 1990, this gap became apparent when approximately 30 industry representatives gathered from around the world, ranging from card manufacturers to equipment and material suppliers. An early meeting centered around the idea of creating an association that could address the needs of this expanding industry. From this vision, ICMA was born. Seven companies, including four international members, formed the association’s founding board and membership, marking the beginning of an organization that would soon become the cornerstone of the global card industry.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Leadership
ICMA’s early years were dedicated to bringing together manufacturers, material suppliers and service providers. The first ICMA members saw an industry that lacked unity and recognized the potential to build a stronger, more cohesive community. By the third quarter of 1990, ICMA had just seven members; today, that number has grown to over 200 members, including more than 100 international companies.
As the card manufacturing industry flourished, so has ICMA’s role in it. Over the years, ICMA has grown into the epicenter for the global card industry, uniting stakeholders across diverse regions—North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and beyond. The association’s mission is clear: to promote collaboration, creativity and innovation across all segments of the card manufacturing and personalization sector.
The Evolution of the Industry
ICMA’s influence has mirrored the transformation of the card industry. From its early days focused mainly on financial transaction cards, the scope of card manufacturing has expanded dramatically. Today, ICMA represents a wide variety of card types, including financial transaction cards, ID cards, access control cards, loyalty cards, gift cards and transportation cards. The materials used in card production have also evolved, with companies now manufacturing cards from a diverse range of materials such as plastic, ocean-recovered plastic, wood and paper.
Despite the rise of digital cards and mobile apps, physical cards continue to play a central role in global markets. Financial transaction cards, in particular, remain at the forefront, supported by major financial brands like Mastercard, Visa and American Express. The adaptability of physical cards has ensured their staying power, even as technology continues to push boundaries in all of the card sectors.
Connecting the Global Community
From the very beginning, one of ICMA’s key goals has been to bring together card industry stakeholders from around the world. To achieve this, the association has held its annual EXPO conference and tradeshow since 1991, bringing together members in diverse global locations. Over the years, these events have been hosted in cities including Munich, Prague, Athens and Scottsdale, Arizona. These gatherings provide an invaluable platform for networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration.
In addition to EXPO, ICMA has organized other events such as CardTREX and continues to provide opportunities for industry professionals to share best practices and foster relationships. The association also presents the prestigious Élan Awards each year, recognizing excellence in card design and manufacturing. These awards help members gain media visibility and enhance relationships with their customers.
A Vision for the Future
As ICMA celebrates 35 years, it continues to serve as the epicenter of the global card manufacturing industry. Today, the association offers a wide array of resources for its members, including industry publications, educational programs and valuable networking opportunities. With an eye on the future, ICMA remains committed to expanding its global footprint and fostering an environment where innovation and collaboration thrive.
Looking back, it’s clear that ICMA’s journey from a small group of founding members to a global powerhouse has been nothing short of remarkable. Under the leadership of Jeffrey E. Barnhart, founder and executive director of ICMA, the association has consistently championed the interests of card manufacturers and suppliers, pushing the industry forward while maintaining a strong focus on education, security and sustainability.
“As the card industry continues to evolve, the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing will remain paramount. ICMA’s role as a catalyst for innovation and its commitment to supporting its members ensure that the future of the card manufacturing industry is bright,” said Barnhart. “With technology constantly changing, one thing remains clear: transaction cards are here to stay, and ICMA will continue to lead the way in shaping their future.”
The 35th anniversary is not just a celebration of the past—it’s a look ahead to the next chapter in the exciting journey of the global card industry. As ICMA reflects on its milestones, its founders and long-time supporters remain committed to fostering a connected, collaborative and forward-thinking industry for years to come.
